Sikorsky-Boeing SB-1 Defiant

The Sikorsky-Boeing SB-1 Defiant was a high-speed helicopter demonstrator built for the US Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft competition. It used coaxial rigid rotors and a rear pusher propeller, the same basic compound-helicopter idea later seen on the S-97. The aircraft reached speeds beyond conventional utility helicopters while retaining vertical-takeoff ability. Although the programme lost to Bell’s V-280, the Defiant remains a major step in modern high-speed rotorcraft research.

Did you know?

Where its Bell V-280 rival used tiltrotors, the Defiant kept a helicopter's vertical rotors and added a pusher propeller for extra forward speed.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Sikorsky-Boeing SB-1 Defiant starts as a Legendary catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you. The first catch of a legendary type pays a bonus of its own.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Sikorsky-Boeing, the SB-1 Defiant family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
