Irkut MC-21-300

The Irkut MC-21 is a Russian narrow-body airliner designed to compete with the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX families. Its unusually large composite wing and wider cabin aim to improve efficiency and passenger comfort. Western sanctions forced the programme to replace several imported systems and engines with domestic alternatives, slowing entry into service. The MC-21-300 is therefore notable not just as a new airliner but as a test of Russia’s ability to build a modern commercial aircraft supply chain.

The Irkut MC-21's unusually wide composite wing was built to rival the A320neo and 737 MAX, though sanctions forced a late shift to domestic engines and systems.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Irkut MC-21-300 starts as a Legendary catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you. The first catch of a legendary type pays a bonus of its own.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Irkut, the MC-21-300 family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
