Ilyushin Il-62

The Ilyushin Il-62 was the Soviet Union's first long-range jet airliner, entering service in 1967 to connect Moscow with distant destinations non-stop. Its four engines are mounted in pairs at the rear of the fuselage, giving it a distinctive T-tail silhouette shared with few other large airliners. That rear-heavy engine placement required a fuel tank in the tail fin and a wheeled tail-skid, since the aircraft could tip backward while parked and being loaded. It served as the Soviet Union's flagship airliner for decades, including as the presidential aircraft.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Ilyushin Il-62 starts as a Very rare catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Ilyushin, the Il-62 family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
