Grumman American AA-1 Tr2

The American AA-1 traces back to designer Jim Bede's BD-1, a kit aircraft first flown in 1963 that Bede intended for amateur builders. After Bede left the company in 1965, American Aviation reworked the design into the factory-built AA-1 Yankee, first flying in 1967. Its wings and fuselage use bonded aluminum honeycomb panels glued rather than riveted together, an unusual construction that gave the airframe a smooth, rivet-free skin and simplified assembly. The later Tr2 variant added a cruise propeller, deluxe interior and fuller avionics fit aimed at cross-country flying rather than pure primary training.

Did you know?

The rivet-free one: its honeycomb panels are bonded, not riveted, giving the Yankee its famously smooth skin.
