Shenyang F-5

The Shenyang J-5 was China’s licence-built MiG-17 fighter, a swept-wing jet that became a cornerstone of Chinese air defence in the 1960s and 1970s. Though derived from a Soviet design, Chinese production gave the aircraft a long local service life and supported later aviation industry growth. The MiG-17 family proved remarkably agile at subsonic speeds and scored notable combat successes in Vietnam. Its compact fuselage and swept wings represent the classic early Cold War fighter shape.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Shenyang F-5 starts as a Legendary catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you. The first catch of a legendary type pays a bonus of its own.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Shenyang, the F-5 family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
