Schleicher ASK-21Mi

The Schleicher ASK 21 Mi takes one of the world's most widely used two-seat training gliders, the ASK 21, and adds a retractable engine on a pylon behind the wing so it can launch itself into the air without a tow plane or winch. First flown in December 2004, its self-contained fuel-injected engine lets a gliding club operate independently of ground-launch infrastructure and weather-sensitive tow schedules. Once airborne and at altitude, the pilot retracts the engine and continues soaring exactly like the pure glider version, making it a practical bridge between powered and unpowered flight training.

Did you know?

A glider that launches itself: the engine on a pylon behind the wing folds away once you are climbing, and the rest is pure soaring.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Schleicher ASK-21Mi starts as a Uncommon catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Schleicher, the ASK-21Mi family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
