Polikarpov I-16
The Polikarpov I-16 was the world's first cantilever low-wing monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear to reach squadron service, entering Soviet air force use in 1935, years before Western air forces fielded comparable designs. Stubby, fast and famously tricky to fly, it earned the nicknames 'Rata' (rat) from Nationalist pilots and 'Mosca' (fly) from Republicans during the Spanish Civil War, where it briefly gave the Republican government air superiority. It also bore the brunt of the Luftwaffe's opening 1941 attacks despite being outclassed by then, and its radical layout influenced fighter design across the following decade.
