Lockheed P2V Neptune
The Lockheed P2V Neptune was a long-range maritime patrol aircraft that combined radial piston engines with small jet engines under the wings for extra takeoff and dash power. It hunted submarines, laid mines, and conducted reconnaissance during the Cold War. Neptunes were also used in the first US Navy carrier nuclear-strike trials, taking off with jet-assist from a carrier but landing ashore. Their mixed-propulsion configuration gives the aircraft an unmistakable and unusual profile.
