Ilyushin Il-14
The Ilyushin Il-14, NATO reporting name Crate, is a Soviet twin-radial transport developed in the late 1940s to replace the ubiquitous Douglas DC-3 and its Soviet-built version, the Lisunov Li-2. It was a reworked Il-12 with a new wing, a broader tailfin and two Shvetsov ASh-82T-7 radial piston engines that greatly improved the engine-out behaviour that had plagued the Il-12. More than 1,300 were built, many under licence in East Germany and Czechoslovakia, and its ruggedness made it a long-serving workhorse on rural routes and poor-quality airfields before the Antonov An-24 and Yakovlev Yak-40 replaced it.

Did you know?
The Crate was the Soviet answer to the DC-3: a reworked Il-12 with a new wing and bigger tailfin to tame engine-out handling.

In CatchFlights
In CatchFlights the Ilyushin Il-14 starts as a Legendary catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you. The first catch of a legendary type pays a bonus of its own.
A catch counts for the manufacturer Ilyushin, the Il-14 family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.
Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
