Fairey Gannet
The Fairey Gannet was a carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft powered by the unusual Double Mamba engine: two turboprops coupled to turn contra-rotating propellers. In cruise, one engine could be shut down to extend endurance while the other kept the aircraft airborne. Its large radar-equipped belly and folding wings suited long submarine patrols from British carriers. The distinctive exhausts, twin tail fins, and paired propellers make the Gannet unlike almost any other naval aircraft.

Did you know?
Twin tail fins and paired contra-rotating propellers from its unique Double Mamba engine make the Gannet one of the oddest-looking carrier aircraft ever built.

In CatchFlights
In CatchFlights the Fairey Gannet starts as a Legendary catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you. The first catch of a legendary type pays a bonus of its own.
A catch counts for the manufacturer Fairey, the Gannet family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.
Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
