Avro 683 Lancaster

The Avro Lancaster was Britain's primary heavy bomber of the Second World War, carrying a larger single bomb load than any other Allied bomber, including the specially developed 'Grand Slam' bomb weighing over ten tonnes. Its unobstructed bomb bay, running almost the full length of the fuselage, let it carry unusually large single weapons that smaller-bay American bombers couldn't accommodate. It carried out the famous 1943 'Dambusters' raid, using specially designed bouncing bombs to breach German dams. Only two Lancasters remain airworthy today, one in Britain and one in Canada, making any flight a rare public event.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Avro 683 Lancaster starts as a Legendary catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you. The first catch of a legendary type pays a bonus of its own.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Avro, the 683 Lancaster family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
