Auster Auster 5
The Auster J family covers Auster Aircraft's post-war civilian tourers built at Rearsby on the robust wartime Auster V airframe, headed by the three-seat J/1 Autocrat that first flew in 1945. Roughly 400 Autocrats were delivered by 1952, making it one of Britain's most successful early post-war light aircraft, used by flying clubs, charter operators and for banner-towing and aerial photography. In October 1946 an Autocrat became the first civilian aircraft to land aboard an aircraft carrier, touching down on HMS Illustrious in the English Channel. Later J-series derivatives, including the more powerful J/1B Aiglet, extended the same simple high-wing formula through the 1950s.
