Antonov An-70

The Antonov An-70 uses four unusual propfan engines, a hybrid between a turboprop and a turbofan with large, swept, multi-blade propellers enclosed in a partial cowling, aimed at combining jet-like speed with turboprop-like fuel efficiency and short-field performance. That propfan technology promised significant fuel savings over a comparable pure-jet transport, though it added real mechanical complexity that slowed the program's development for years. Political tension between Russia and Ukraine after 2014 badly disrupted the Ukrainian-Russian joint development effort behind the aircraft. Only a small number were ever completed, leaving the An-70's ambitious propfan technology largely unrealised at production scale.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Antonov An-70 starts as a Legendary catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you. The first catch of a legendary type pays a bonus of its own.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Antonov, the An-70 family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
