Aerospatiale SA-315 Lama

The Aerospatiale SA315 Lama combined a lightweight Alouette II airframe with the more powerful engine and rotor of the larger Alouette III, creating a helicopter built specifically for exceptional high-altitude performance. It once held the world helicopter altitude record, having flown above 12,000 metres, a mark that showcased its extraordinary power-to-weight ratio at thin high-altitude air. That capability made it the helicopter of choice for Himalayan rescue and supply missions for decades, including flights to Everest base camp long before more modern helicopters could match its high-altitude payload. A number remain in mountain service across Nepal and India today.

In CatchFlights

In CatchFlights the Aerospatiale SA-315 Lama starts as a Rare catch. The tier is an editorial judgement of how special a sighting of this type is. The more often you catch it, the closer it moves to Common for you.

A catch counts for the manufacturer Aerospatiale, the SA-315 Lama family and the model in your collection, and the daily Type Rating quiz asks about the types of each family.

Catch it yourself.CatchFlights shows the aircraft flying near you on a radar, so a type like this one is only a catch away when it passes overhead. Explore CatchFlights.
